The RHEON Reflex

RHEON’s adaptive chemistry reacts instinctively to control energy. In the blink of an eye, RHEON changes how it behaves when it feels sudden impact or tension.

We designed FLY Racing USA’s Impact Energy Cells with a unique maze-like structure to allow them to compress and shear. This intentional movement maximises absorption of low speed linear and rotational impacts linked with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). Here we describe the RHEON Reflex seen in these Impact Energy Cells:

ABSORBS IMPACT ENERGY

RHEON is soft and flexible in its normal state, but when it’s hit with something hard and fast it instantly but temporarily becomes stiff. RHEON absorbs impact energy much better than conventional materials, taking energy out of an impact so it’s not transferred to the wearer.

DEALS WITH THE UNEXPECTED

RHEON’s special “Voronoi” geometries move in different ways to deal with both rotational and linear energy. The critical sideways movement called “shear” can counter rotational forces. RHEON’s unique molecular shape (together with its patented geometries) controls rotational energy that can come at you from any direction. RHEON introduces a shear layer that helps to absorbs rotational energy. Traditional impact absorbing materials like EPS (polystyrene) often don’t move in shear at all.

HANDLES HIGH & LOW SPEEDS

RHEON absorbs and controls energy. Critically, it is able to absorb energy at different speeds too. RHEON absorbs energy regardless of speed, helping to protect you (and your brain, if it’s in your helmet!) from the different effects of high- and low-speed impacts: a crucial factor in ‘real-world’ protection.

IMPROVES COMFORT AND FIT

RHEON naturally adapts to the wearer’s head-shape for improved comfort and fit.

ABOUT RHEON LABS

RHEON LABS has developed a revolutionary, highly strain-rate sensitive material – RHEON™ – capable of absorbing high levels of energy in impact, tension and vibration. The technology is patent protected and emerged from 15 years of research work carried out by Dr Daniel Plant at Imperial College, London. Scientists, engineers and designers work with best-in-class sports brands to build custom integrated solutions to enhance the performance, comfort and protection of their products.
